What is an umbrella?

What is an umbrella?

- Now, umbrellas in the photography world are not the type that stop rain. But rather, they're an inexpensive and effective way to spread light over a large distance. Now, what we're going to do is we're going to connect this to our light stand, and we're going to have our light hit the inside of this umbrella and the light is going to come out at about 180 degrees and is going to spread onto our subjects. Now, there are two types of umbrellas. We have a reflective umbrella, which this is here, and we also have what's called a shoot-through umbrella. A shoot-through umbrella is kind of misleading. We're not actually going to point our camera through the umbrella and shoot. But rather, we're going to point the light through the umbrella, and what it's going to do is give us a very nice, soft and pleasing light that falls onto our subject. Now, that's going to be a perfect light source for portraits. Now, let's go work with these umbrellas and see 'em in action.
