- I'll be honest. Getting good at lighting with flashes can be really frustrating. The fact that you can't see the effect of the flash until after you've taken the shot means that you're going to have to shoot a lot of failed flash pictures, and that can wear down your confidence. Try not to worry about that. It's perfectly normal to have to experiment and refine when working with flash. Also, have faith in the process and effects of practice. As you work more with your flashes, you will get a better feel for the effect a flash is going to create, and so, as you go along, you will need fewer test shots, and thus fewer failed attempts. When practicing with flash, it's best to start simple. Don't jump into trying to craft complex three-light lighting schemes. Get a single flash and work with it as a sole key light. Get used to the process of figuring out exposure. Do some exploration of your camera's TTL system if it has one, so that you can figure out if you like its lighting…
