Which filters should you carry?

- There are a wide variety of different filters available that you can attach to the front of your lens, serving a variety of different purposes, and yet there are only two types of filters that I consistently carry, and that I recommend most photographers consider having in their camera bag. The first is a neutral density filter. This is essentially sunglasses for your lens so that, for example, with a very dense neutral density filter we can achieve very long exposures, even during daylight hours. And so I tend to carry a six stop or a 10 stop neutral density filter with me. There are a variety of other options, as well. The key is to have that option to create longer exposures or to open up the lens aperture more than you otherwise would, be able to by using sunglasses for your lens. A solid neutral density filter.
