- I often hear photographers insist that it is critical that you shoot in manual exposure mode. I certainly don't subscribe to that idea and in fact, on a very regular basis I use the aperture priority exposure mode. However, I do generally warn photographers against the use of shutter priority mode except when it's especially necessary. Why is it that I like aperture priority mode, but not shutter priority? It has nothing to do with controlling depth of field, for example, because I can still monitor camera settings regardless of the exposure mode and make sure that I'm getting a good lens aperture for example. Instead, with shutter priority there's a risk that you might actually run out of apertures. What do I mean by that? Well, let's take a look at the list of available shutter speeds on a typical camera in one stop increments and then the available lens aperture settings on a typical lens, again in one stop increments.
