Why are there different metering modes?

- Throughout this course, I've been referring to your camera's light meter. In fact, your camera actually kind of has several different meters, it's actually only got one, but it can work in several different modes. Most cameras these days have something called a matrix mode, it's sometimes called an evaluative mode, or a multi segment mode. Your camera will tell you what it's called. These meters work by taking a scene and dividing it up into a bunch of little grids. Each cell in the grid is then metered, and all of that is averaged together to come up with a good overall metering. Now, when I say averaged, it's much more complex than just assigning a number to each cell, and then averaging them. Metering modes go through lots of complex calculations based on what the auto focus is telling it that the subject of the image is. Or based on the distance to your subject.
