The real reason for a UV filter

- If you think back to when you bought your very first camera, which for many of us is quite a long time ago, you might remember, there's a good chance, the camera store recommended that along with the camera body and the lens, you should get a UV filter to put on the front of the lens. And there's often a lot of debate about whether or not a UV filter is good or bad. To be sure, a UV filter, an ultraviolet filter, can cut back on atmospheric haze just a little bit, but it's also best to avoid using additional filters if you don't need them because every bit of glass that you add to your lens has the potential to reduce overall sharpness. But there is one very good reason that a lot of photographers still prefer to have a UV filter on the front of their lens, even though it's not going to do much to really improve image quality. Conceptually, it might reduce image quality just a little bit, but that's not a major concern…
