Controlling selective contrast with definition
- While tonal adjustments are quite useful, you may also find that the definition adjustment does a good job of selective contrast. What it does is it looks at the mid tones and it puts a bit more definition in the areas that seem to lack contrast. This tends to be more useful, and it's not as heavy-handed as a global contrast adjustment. It's a bit more selective. Let's take an image that has a really tough dynamic range. I'll double click here to go back to navigation view, and scroll down to this jpeg file that was a panoramic captured on my smartphone. Now this particular image has a lot of detail in it, but not a lot of information, since it's a jpeg. Let's click the edit button and zoom in a little bit, and look at the different areas. The histogram shows me a good wide exposure of information. We've got lots of information across the middle, as well as some information in the highlights, and we could put a little…
