What you should know before watching this course

- Now, before we jump into this course, there's a handful of things that I'd like you to realize. First up, we're going to be teaching using both PCs and Macs. I'm going to mostly favor the Windows platform, but I'll occasionally jump onto a Mac as well, so you can see how the two applications are sometimes slightly different. Microsoft has subtle differences between their Mac version and Windows versions of the software. So, it doesn't matter which tool you use, which platform. You should be able to get good use out of it. I hope that you have a basic familiarity with Microsoft Office software. In no way do you need to be an expert, but you should be familiar with creating documents and navigating your way through the files. If you've never used Office software before, consider taking the Essential Training courses available here online. I also want you to realize that the commands may vary slightly, depending upon the version of the tools that you're using. Now, when there's a big difference between Mac and Windows, I'll be sure to show you. But if you're using an older version of the software or a newer version that comes out in the future, you might find that Microsoft occasionally moves the button. But knowing the command is called will let you quickly locate it, and, in general, things should be pretty similar between software versions and platforms. I also want you to have general computing skills. You should be comfortable navigating on your computer to find files and open documents, as well as take advantage of things like a web browser and use your trackpad or mouse for navigation. It'll be ideal that you have internet access on the computer that you're working with, especially when we cover some of the online image editors. And, if possible, be sure to download the exercise files. This will help you get hands-on experience. We'll talk more about those in just a moment. Finally, I want you to realize that if you have complex documents that have been created by another professional, multi-page documents, brochures, annual reports, you might need some advanced training if you're going to work with these and need to make difficult or elaborate edits. There are many different tools out there, including professional tools like Adobe InDesign, that's frequently used for complex layout. In this course, we're going to focus on really four pieces of software. We're going to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, but if you need to use the techniques inside of Excel, they're quite similar. Additionally, I'll dabble in Photoshop Elements, as well as a handful of online image editors, so you can see some advanced tools that could be useful to you in your workflow. And finally, we'll jump into Adobe Acrobat quickly in case you need to work with PDF files. All right, let's talk for a moment about the exercise files.
