Add noise or grain
- One of the most elementary ways in which we can use texture to add presence to an image is through the application of grain, and in this image I have applied the grain through the Camera Raw filter, but I'll also show you some other ways in which we can achieve the same end. Coming to my starting state, this is how the image begins, and the first thing I want to do is right-click to the right of the layer name and convert the layer to a Smart Object so that I can apply filters in a non-destructive way. I'll come to the filter menu and choose Camera Raw filter. Now I'm going to go to the Camera Raw filter twice. Typically I would do both steps in one pass, but here I'm going to separate them out so that I can also show you other ways of applying grain. So for this first pass, I am just going to come to the Effects, and I am going to add some post-crop vignetting, and that's just going to darken the edges of my frame, and I will also adjust the midpoint as well.
