Adding a gradient masks

- [Voiceover] Layer masks are simply grey scale documents that Photoshop uses to control the visibility of a layer. Since they are just grey scale images under the hood, they can be edited with any of the tools that you might use to edit a regular image. For some composites that don't require a hard and precise edge, one way to create a really interesting blend between two photos, is to use the gradient tool on a layer mask. Let's check it out. So for this demo I have this interior view of the cathedral and a photograph of a forest. Now both of these images have really strong vertical elements in them. Obviously, trees in a forest are vertical and the cathedral also has strong vertical lines in the form of the pillars on the columns here. So when we combine these together with a gradient mask, the blending of those similar, but very different, vertical elements from the forest to the cathedral, is going to create a really interesting and visually strong image.
