Applying editable smart adjustments

- [Instructor] In this movie, I'll introduce you to a relatively new feature inside of Photoshop CC and that's the ability to apply color adjustments. Things like brightness, contrast, and as we'll see, vibrance and color balance directly to a Smart Object as opposed to expressing them as adjustment layers. And so here we have a washed-out photo of me and some of my buddies at a music festival. And so whenever you want to convert a plain, old photograph to a Smart Object, the first step is to convert the background to an editable layer. And you do that by, of course, double-clicking on the background. And that gives you a chance to name the layer before you turn it into a Smart Object, which is a best practice for a reason that I'll demonstrate in just a moment. And so I'll go ahead and call this layer, group, let's say, and click OK. Now, armed with the rectangular marquis tool, which is available up here at the top of the toolbox.
