Aspect ratio

- You can't talk about cropping without talking about aspect ratio, the ratio of an image's width to its height. Aspect ratio, I think, is a critical tool in landscape photography, and one that not everyone thinks about. If you are shooting with a digital SLR or a 35 millimeter film camera, you're likely shooting in a 3:2 aspect ratio. If you're shooting with a micro 4/3 camera, most point-and-shoot cameras, smartphone, then you're shooting in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Aspect ratio really comes into play with landscape photos because of the way that we see landscapes. Let's take a look at this image and a quick look at the cropping tool in Lightroom. This is like most cropping tools. You've already seen this padlock that lets me lock my aspect ratios so that when I make adjustments, my aspect ratio doesn't change, in this case it's preserving the original 3:2 aspect ratio.
