Background strategies: Bokeh and black

- [Instructor] Now, the sad fact of the matter is you're not always going to find stunning backgrounds. And so what do you do if your background just plain sucks or if your subject blends into it? And the answer is you blur it with bokeh or remove it with black. Now, many of you know what bokeh is and many of you probably don't so here is the idea. As you can see in the case of this ribbon eel, we have this wonderfully blurry background that actually has very soft shapes inside of it that are formed by the shape of the aperture. And so our definition is bokeh is the aesthetically pleasing quality of the out-of-focus portion of the photograph captured with a shallow depth of field, that's very important, which you can achieve using low aperture values.
