- When people think of Photoshop, they typically imagine this vast and amazing super application that goes on and on forever with limitless ability to transform the real world into other worldly art, which is true of course, in fact, we'll be doing lots of that, but Photoshop has a practical side as well and that practical side has a name. It's a plugin called Camera Raw. And although Camera Raw runs inside Photoshop, it's actually an independent program. Camera Raw is specifically designed to enhance photographic images. Imagine Photoshop without layers and with just a limited ability to make selections. In other words, Camera Raw is mostly about making global modifications to entire images at a time. Camera Raw even lets you modify multiple photos at once, which something Photoshop can't do, and it offers better controls for color balancing images, breathing life into overly dark shadows, and dimming down overly bright highlights.
