Choosing a focal length

In our past example I guessed about the focal length. That's because I'm relatively familiar with cameras and lenses and I made an educated guess. However, there is no perfect option here, unless it happens to be embedded in the metadata. With a modern digital image you can actually look up the lens information right inside the photograph. If you take a look at a photo that's digital, you may see additional information about how it was captured. For example I see the aperture here was 2.8 and the shutter speed. But what I'm really interested in is the lens information. So you'll want to scan down and go to the Camera Data. Here, I see the Focal Length of 200 millimeters, and it was a 70 to 200-millimeter zoom lens. I also see though that the effective focal length was 300 millimeters.
