Now, you can effectively extract layers while breaking up a smart object. Previously, you had to copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop between windows. Now, just right-click with Rectangular Marquee and choose Convert to Layers, which is also available as a button in the Properties panel. Either way, you convert the smart object to a group. You also abandon any nondestructive transformations, smart filters, layer effects as well, meaning, you lose anything assigned to the smart object shell.
