Create a charcoal portrait

- [Instructor] In this movie I am going to recreate this charcoal portrait using the charcoal filter in combination with some other filters and some additional techniques. Here is where I begin. First thing I want to do is convert the background layer to a smart object. Right click to the right of the layer name and convert that to a smart object. Next I'll come to my Paths panel where I have saved a path around the face. I'll activate that as a selection by command or control clicking on path one. Then come back to the Layers panel and make that into a layer mask. Beneath the figure I want to put a solid fill layer and then add a pattern overlay to this so we have some paper texture. Solid color and I'm going to choose an off white and then from the layer effects I'll choose Pattern Overlay. And I'm going to use a pattern called White Textured, which is from Artist Surfaces. So if you need to load that you can append that and then choose White Textured. And I want this to be at 100%…
