- If you need to extract an object from the background or blur the background, Topaz offers a tool for creating complex selections. Now, Photoshop has come a long way on this front, but Topaz is a useful tool that you may find a welcome addition to your tool kit. Let's see it in action. We'll start with a simple example here of a bird. And from the filter menu I can choose Topaz, mask AI. There's two different technologies at play here. We can use contrast-based masking or AI. To speed things up, click the auto button and have it detect the object. It'll attempt to find the key details. The red areas are meant to be cut away. The green areas are to be kept. And the blue area is a transition zone. In this case, it's close, but, using the left bracket for a smaller brush, I'm going to have it analyze these feathers a little bit more, because there's a lot of small divots.
