Creating bleached bypass effects with a Black & White adjustment layer
- A very traditional technique with black and white photography is a bleach bypass. Now this technique really washes out the image leaving a hint of color and it tends to leave a bleached image that has brighter areas and really dark areas. Now the hint of color is usually quite subtle, so it's not a true black and white photograph, but it is similar and it's gonna use the Black & White adjustment layer. Let me show you how to create it. Let's take a look at a bleach bypass effect. This is an effect that essentially combines a black and white image with a color image and it usually has reduced chroma and increased contrast. Now in this case there's a couple of changes happening. If we take a look at the original photo it's a really strong, bright image at sunset along the coast of Italy. And what I first applied was a Vibrance adjustment layer here to make a little bit of changes. You see it tones down the color in the sky.
