Delving the Filter menu to great effect
- When you first meet Photo Shop it is dense beyond belief. Tool after tool, panel after panel, menus and side menus trapped in menus with still more menus. The thing is stupid huge. I believe the technical word is Brobdingnagian, but right there smack dab in the middle is this menu called Filter. I've watched students go to this menu for years. People gravitate toward it. I think there's a kind of promise there. If the purpose of Photo Shop is to take regular images and make them more awesome, the Filter menu seems like the natural place to go. Sure enough Photo Shop's Filter menu offers more than a 120 effects, but as you might expect from any group of 120 things, 120 shoes, 120 socks, 120 frying pans, these 120 things aren't anywhere near equal. Many are hopelessly old devoid of any modern purpose. A few are awkward. Some look better on the shelf than they do on you. Seriously, dude, take off that frying pan. Then, there are a few that rock which is why I came up with this chapter.…
