Depth, contour, and texture

- The topic of this chapter is layer effects. Now the purpose of a layer effect is to highlight the contours of a layer, the edges along which the pixels transition from opaque to transparent, or to color or texture the interior of a layer. For example, a drop shadow traces along the transparent edge outside the active layer, while an inner shadow traces along the interior of that layer. Color overlay fills the inside of a layer. Bevel and emboss creates a sculpted edge, but regardless all are useful for imparting a sense of directional lighting and depth. Layer effects are also parametric, meaning that you can modify them any time you like by changing a few numerical parameters. They take up next to no room in memory, you can apply layer effects to entire groups of layers so that they cast, for example, a single shadow or share a common stroke. And you can apply multiple shadows and strokes to a single layer in order to create a deep or sculpted effects. Now one last note, remember…
