Depth of field

- [Instructor] In this movie, we're going to discuss depth of field. Now, for a given sensor and lens combination, aperture is what ultimately determines your depth of field. And as you may recall back from chapter four, aperture is that element of your lens that opens and closes like the iris of your eye. And it's measured in F stops which are kinds of fractions. So the number is the denominator. And as a result, a higher number means a more closed aperture. And lower number means a more open aperture. - [Instructor] So in very general terms, depth of field is the area that you perceive to be in focus in an image. So let's take a look at depth of field in both wide angle and macro scenarios. So we'll start out by looking at depth of field in wide angle images. So here on the left, we're looking at a soft coral. That's that orange thing in the foreground and this is growing on a piece of a wreck and we can see part of that wreck in the background.
