Dodging and burning a mask

- I often like to use a dodging and burning technique to lighten and darken specific areas of a photo, but we can actually also use that same dodging and burning method to clean up a difficult layer mask. Let's take a look at an example here. I have a very tricky subject. I have a macaque with very fuzzy fur set against a green background. If I wanted to apply an adjustment to that background, for example, I would need to create a selection or create a layer mask based on that. And you can imagine with that fuzzy fur, that can be a real challenge. But the concept of dodging and burning can actually help improve my results there. I'm going to start off by creating a selection based on a channel. I'll go to my Channels panel and then take a look at the Red channel, the Green channel, and the Blue channel, just clicking on the thumbnail for each so that I'm able to see only that one individual channel, looking for a channel that will provide the best starting point for my selection.
