Downsampling for email and photo sharing

- [Instructor] In this movie, I'll show you how to downsample an image in order to email it or to post it to a photo sharing or social media site such as Shutterfly or Instagram or Twitter or Facebook. There's tons of 'em out there. And basically there's two goals here. One is to try to get the file size on disk to five megabytes or less. That's generally a good target. And the other is to reduce the size of the image so that it's viewable on the largest monitor out there. Because if it's larger than the biggest monitor there is, then what's the point? You want the person to be able to view it at full size, after all. Now I don't want to ruin the original image, so the first thing I'm going to do is go up to the image menu and choose the Duplicate command. And notice inside this dialog box, you have this checkbox, Duplicate Merged Layers Only, which if you were working inside of a layered document, it would be a good idea to turn that checkbox on, because after all we want to create a…
