Duplicating Smart Objects

- [Instructor] We need to know the difference between duplicating a smart object and creating a new smart object via copy because there are times when we might want several instances of a layer to be linked and other times when we want them to behave independently from one another. So here I have a multi-layer document. The layers happen to be shaped layers, but it can be any kind of layers. They could be type layers or pixel based layers. It doesn't matter. We can see we have a white circle, I've got the match head, I've got three different flames, as well as the match stick, the black circle and the rectangle. I'm going to create a single smart object from all of these layers by selecting them all on the layers panel and then choosing Layer, and then Smart Objects and then Convert to Smart Object. Now to make a copy of the smart object that can be edited independently from the first, I'm going to want to use the Layer menu…
