Edges vs. noise
- [Instructor] Alright, so unlike the color range command, which, as you may recall, allows you to select or partially select related luminance levels inside of a specified range, the focus area command is an edge detection function. And so, what do I mean by that? Well, whether we're talking about Photoshop or any other application that allows you to modify digital images, an edge is an area of rapid luminance transitions between neighboring pixels on a channel-by-channel basis, as we'll see in just a moment, representative of the actual scene. And so in the case of this photograph right here, a great example of an edge is the boundary between this guy's forehead and the background. And so the forehead is quite bright and reflective, and, by the way, it's orange, just as we all are. So it doesn't matter what luminance level your skin is, you are ultimately an orange person, set against this medium to dark green background. And so as a result, we have a very definite edge.
