Evaluating the photo

- In this chapter, we will evaluate our photo as one that can be restored, and plan the steps to restoration. We will discuss the restoration processes to restore, and in what order to do them. Let's begin. Before we can restore a photo, we need to find out what the damage is and what we are dealing with, and the best way to approach it. The photo we're looking at is an old black and white silver highlight print. During the print process a chemical containing silver highlight is used as part of the photographic emulsion. When exposed to light, the silver highlight forms silver. It is these silver particles that reflect the light giving us the tones in the photo. Unfortunately for us, they're especially noticeable when scanning, as they act like tiny mirrors and reflect back the light from the scanner as a blue hue.
