- In this chapter, we'll start by tackling the stains and fades with a variety of techniques which will help remove the majority of the uneven patches, giving us a much more even image to work with. We'll start by fixing the color cast and stains with convert to black and white and move on to faded and mottled areas. Now we know the steps, let's get started. You would have opened mottled and damaged before one and be presented with this image. It's very heavily stained with yellow and blue silvering. We need to correct this in order to restore the photo. The reason why we want to remove the color, is we want to even out the photo. We want to get back to the photo's detail, removing the color information. What that will do is give us a more even image to work with. We'll be able to see the damage more clearly. Then we'll be able to restore it that much better.
