- [Instructor] Hi and welcome to Design Tools Weekly with me, Tony Harmer. This week, I'd like to appreciate the most basic and perhaps the most essential design tool that we have, the pencil. You have time to think when you're working using a pencil. And I believe that every project should start with one. In my studio there are a few that I use for different things. And starting with the most basic, which is almost exclusively used for writing and of course, the odd bit of woodwork would be the pencils I used at school, the Steadler Tradition, which are still a good basic pencil to have around for note taking. And as I said, the odd bit of woodwork is handy too because they can lay down quite a lot of dark. Schools in the US favor the Dixon Ticonderoga number two, which equates to HB in the European scale. And these are a great pencil with good point retention, and that's just another way of saying it stay sharper…
