How do I improve the dynamic range of a standard photo?

- The dynamic range in an image describes the difference between the lightest and darkest areas. Images that have a large dynamic range tend to have a wider range of detail from lightest to darkest areas. But not every photograph will have this captured in camera. Let's take a look at this image here and I'll bring up the histogram so I can better judge what's happening. You'll notice that there's definitely some gaps here in the shadows and particularly, in the highlights. There are a few ways to go about optimizing this if you are working with an image here that is not a RAW file. First up, one of the things you can do is take advantage of adjustment layers. By dragging in the black point to the left most edge where the histogram begins to rise, you've remapped the darkest point of pure black. You can then drag the white point in to the similar rising point there of the histogram. A shortcut for this is to Opt or Alt +…
