- Sharpening is the act of enhancing the details in an image and it's normal to need to sharpen, even if a photo is perfectly in focus. That's because compression in the camera sensor can cause a slight loss in detail. Let me show you how to sharpen using the Camera Raw dialog or Camera Raw as a filter. When you have an image open, it's important that you zoom in to 100% so you can really judge the details here on the image itself. If you don't view at 100%, sharpening is really hard to accurately judge. Now switch to the third tab and you'll see sharpening controls. By default, a small amount of sharpening is usually pre-applied. If you hold down the option or the alt key, you can adjust the amount of sharpening. In this case, I'm taking it to a much higher value and you see that some of the details in the water are really starting to come through. But chances are, you don't want to sharpen everything.
