How will selections be used?

- One of the tricky things about learning to use selections in Photoshop is that when you're creating a selection, very often you're not actually accomplishing anything, at least not changing anything about the photo itself. You're simply selecting an area. Now ultimately, of course, the aim is to do something with the area of the image that you selected. And I think it can be helpful right from the start to have at least a basic understanding of how you might put selections to use before you start learning how to create selections. So let's take a look at an example here. I have a photo of a leaf here, essentially, with some shadows cast across it. If I create a selection of this bright area over on the right-hand side, now, don't worry too much about how I'm actually performing these tasks, just think of this as a way to get a sense for how you might use selections in your own work flow. But I have defined a specific area of the photo. In this case, this portion, oh, it's maybe 20%…
