Hue, saturation, and “vibrance”

- Now if you read the name of this movie before it started playing, you'll see that it includes three words. The first is hue, which is the essential color be it red, cyan, what have you. The second is saturation, which is how colorful that color is, and the third is vibrance which appears in quotes in my title because outside of Photoshop, it's not actually a word. So let's break it down with the help of our helpful color wheel. Hue is expressed by the perimeter of the wheel, the outside edge. So red, orange, yellow and so forth. Saturation goes from the middle, the various shades of gray to super vivid colors around the outside edge. And so, all very well and good, but what is vibrance? Again, not actually a word. There's vibrant which is pulsating with vim and vigor much like me. There's vibrancy which is the state of being vibrant, much like me, but vibrance, that rhymes with prance or chance or trance, really nothing, because none of those words have an "I" sound in front of 'em. Vibrance is very much a made-up word, but in Photoshop it is a very real numerical value measured from positive 100% down to negative 100%, and it works on moderately saturated colors. So at positive 100%, Photoshop takes those moderately saturated colors and boosts the heck out of 'em. At negative 100%, it makes them gray. Either way, it leaves the original grays and the vivid colors alone. Okay, so I know a lot of you have been assigned this course. You've been told to watch it by a teacher or a professor in which case, do this. Go up to your teacher, be kind and respectful of course, and say I learned something about vibrance. It is the gamma of saturation. This is so good, I swear to you. Again, what I want you to say, vibrance is the gamma of saturation. With those six words, you will blow your teacher's mind.
