Indestructible envelopes

The topic of this chapter is Smart Objects. Now, if that sounds a bit wonky, it's not your fault. Smart Objects aren't the least bit smart. In fact, they possess no intelligence whatsoever. And while I guess they're technically objects, you could say the same thing about any layer you create in Photoshop. But even if you don't like their name, you got to love what they do. Smart Objects protect layers, and they keep things editable. You can think of a Smart Object as a kind of indestructible envelope. You put one or more layers into that envelope and from that point on, those layers are impervious to damage. Seriously. Unless you break the seal on the envelope and edit the layers directly, you cannot hurt them. Which means that you can scale and rotate a Smart Object as much as you want. You can apply editable color adjustments without the help of adjustment layers, and you can pummel Smart Objects with effects from the filter menu, including camera raw, and the pixels go unharmed…
