Learning to paint

- I think I've mentioned that I've been using Photoshop for 30 years, as long as it's been out, but here's the thing. Photoshop 1.0, right out of the gate, costs $895, far more than I could afford. So how did I acquire it? By painting. Let me explain. Macworld magazine, which was a big print publication in those days, hired me to write an article about all the color painting programs at the time. Programs like PixelPaint Pro, Studio 32, and I know you're going to think I'm making this up, Color MacCheese. But what I really wanted was the sidebar, in which I covered a couple of up-and-coming photo programs, one called Letraset Color Studio, and the called Adobe Photoshop. So in other words, I got Photoshop by learning how to paint. In this chapter, I'll show you what I've learned in the 30 years since.
