Lighting to maximize or minimize texture

- [Instructor] A basic concept of lighting is that a hard light on angle will emphasize texture. Sometimes this is a good thing, like when you want to show wrinkles. But sometimes it's a bad thing, like when your subject has acne. Retouching pimples is time consuming, so it's best to set the lights to disguise the texture. I photographed this mannequin using a Rembrandt lighting scheme. The highlights are bright, the shadows deep. The transfer zone is sharp and the texture is obvious. I add a diffuser, but the texture remains. Part of the problem is the light is on an angle. So I move the light around toward the back and add a couple of big reflectors in the front. These kick back the light from different angles and now the divots on the chin are almost invisible. You only see texture when you start getting into the shadows.
