Making simple selections - Photoshop Tutorial

- [Instructor] In this chapter, we're going to take a look at some simple tasks involving making selections and working with those and masks, just as an introduction. We'll also be covering them in later movies as well. So I'm just going to close out of this image here by tapping on the home button, and then I'm going to open a moon image that I have in my files. So I'm going to tap Import and open, and I will tap Files just there to go back to my Creative Cloud folder. And if you have the same set of files, then that's happy days, if not, don't worry too much. Anything of your own will do. And I'm just going to tap Moon, and this will open up like so. Now at the minute, this is telling me that it contains unsupported features. And I know what it is, I've used a grayscale version of the file, and it doesn't quite like that just at the moment. But it will still work with it, so I'm okay with that, and I'll get that file fixed before you get your hands on it. So let's go to the selection tools, just two down from the move tool, you will see there a lasso. Now just as in Photoshop on the desktop, you'll see there's a small triangle down in the bottom right-hand corner of that tool's icon. And if you long press on that, then you get access to the other tools in the selection family. What I'm going to do here is tap the ellipse at the end there. Now let's just drag a simple selection like so. Don't aim for anything in particular. There you are, there's your selection with your marching ants. And then down at the bottom you'll notice that a small HUD has appeared there, giving us some further options. Just going to tap de-select. You will also notice, there are some tool options, just here in this small toolbar, which float around on their own. Although if you want to, you can dock them. I kind of like the fact that you can drag them near to where you're working if you want to. So this time, what we're going to do is involve the touch shortcut. So I'm going to start just up here in this corner. I'm just tapping there so you can see where I'm going to begin. But I'm holding down the center of the touch shortcut, and then dragging across, and you can see I get a nice, constrained selection like so. And just as with the desktop version and using the Shift key, you need to release the touch shortcut after you've stopped the selection operation. Let's just cancel that one out, so de-select there. This time, we're going to aim for more or less the center of the moon. I'm going to hold down the touch shortcut and slide to the side, and you'll notice the bubble at the top there is telling me that the select operation is constrained from the center. And then just drag outwards like so. Nice and easy to do that, really, really simple. We'll release that, and then the touch shortcut. Now what I am going to do here now is kind of tune this by using the transform selection option, which I'll get by tapping the ellipsis in the HUD at the bottom of the screen, and choose Transform selection. And you'll notice that if you grab the corner handles, it stays constrained. You can distort it by using the side handles. I'll just two finger tap there to undo that. And equally in the other direction with the side handles there, too. So I'm just going to basically bring this out like that and move it so I've got a little bit of moon poking out on all of the sides of the selection. So somewhere just around about there, I think, is good. In the ellipsis, you do have some options here for rotation angles as well. So if you need to rotate something around, you can do that too. And it's up to the top of the screen, left hand side is cancel, right hand side is done. So our selection has been transformed. You've also got in the tool options here, if I tap the ellipsis there, some options for feathering as well, so you can turn on a bit of feathering if you want to. There are also options there for fixed ratio and fixed size if you need them. And choosing one of those will give you the option to enter values. Okay, that's great. What we'll do then now, is we will just copy this to the clipboard, so I've just turned off the selection tool there. I'm going to tap here, okay, on the ellipsis on the right hand side, And you'll see just inside of here you've got Copy layer, Copy merged, and so on. So I'll just choose Copy layer, because it will copy the selection. And then we can close out this image, so just tap on the home screen just there. And we'll re-open the astro girl image like so.
