Matching natural noise with the Blur Gallery

- [Instructor] Now one of the things about blurring an image, regardless of which filter you use, is that you end up wiping out the natural noise. So the upshot is that when selectively blurring, as when creating a synthetic depth of field effect, you have unblurred areas with noise and blurred areas that are unnaturally smooth. So for example, here we have an image that I shot of my girlfriend Colleen. She looks great. She has a beautiful smile, but my composition could use some work because we have a pretty busy background with this kind of lump coming out of her head. Now we do have some natural depth of field, quite a bit, in fact, as you can see exhibited over here on the left hand side of the image. I want you to see how a natural blur works. We've got noise throughout the image, whether it's relatively in focus or quite out of focus. Now what I decided to do was enhance the out-of-focus background by applying field blur as a smart filter. To see what that looks like, I'll go…
