- Photoshop includes a bunch of what I call secret handshakes, which are features that you need on a regular basis but are nigh on impossible to discover on your own. My favorite example is straightening a crooked photograph. Such a common operation and yet before you can get to it you have to know that straightening is a secondary function of the seemingly unrelated crop tool. The topics of this chapter, scale and rotate, are secret handshakes as well. Before you can resize a layer or change it's angle, you have to know that scale and rotate fall into a category of features that include skew, distort, and warp. Together they are known as transformations because to transform a layer is to alter its shape or position without affecting its fundamental appearance. Photoshop lists all of its transformations under the edit transform submenu. Or better yet, you can apply any kind of transformation all in a single operation using a command called free transform.
