As you build your lighting setup for your photo shoot, you may need to make adjustments and control the lighting. In this video, follow alongside photographer Joe McNally as he finesses his lights to make sure the photograph is exposed well, and ensures that distracting things like flares do not happen.
- Alright, so now I'm going to tap on group C.…So now we have the backlights in,…and they're way hot, and I'm getting flare.…We're going to have to barn door my flashes as well.…What's the zoom on those guys John?…- [John] 85.…- 85, let's zoom 'em down to 200,…and let's do some gaffer tape barn doors please,…and also just take 'em way down power wise.…So my initial exposure with the backlight's…way over blown.…So two things, moves I'm making simultaneously,…lowering the power by four stops,…and also having John shield the lights…from the front element of the camera via gobos,…cutters you could call them.…
I mean, they're not even formalized,…they're pieces of gaffer tape that we make a little…wing out of and we put it on the offending…side of the flash, so in other words,…the flash that is pointed at the camera,…kind of shield the camera from the hot element…of the front of the speedlight.…That's where most of the exposure is.…So I think we'll be okay.…A little less power, and also cutting the light,…I think we'll be alright.…
