Negative space

- [Instructor] In this movie we'll be discussing negative space. So think of it this way, the subject of the photograph is the positive space, everything behind and around it qualifies as negative space. And that negative space is every bit as important as the positive space. So a cool subject is great, but a cool background makes it even better. So here we've got one of the coolest animals out there, a Blue Ring Octopus. But in this case he's kind of sitting on a meh background, he's blending in. Really not a great photo. So I waited a little bit and ten seconds later he hopped up on this beautiful green tubastrea and I took a couple more shots, and it definitely made for a more interesting background. And it really helps to set off the animal as well, because we have such contrasting colors. Now in the case of this little orange Gobi, the blue in the background serves as a complimentary color. And so not only does he stand out nicely, but the foreground and background look great…
