Overview of filters

- [Instructor] There are over 100 filters that ship with Photoshop, and they're all located under the Filter menu. Selecting some filters like the Neural filters in Filter Gallery will display several different filters within a workspace. Other filters are listed individually, such as the Adaptive Wide Angle and the Camera RAW as a filter, while others are grouped into categories, such as your blurs and sharpening filters. I like to think of filters as belonging to one of three primary categories, practical or utilitarian, artistic, and content creation filters. The practical filters include solutions for sharpening images, reducing noise, adding color tints, softening skin and removing JPEG artifacts in images. The artistic filters can apply creative effects such as brush strokes and chalk and charcoal drawing effects. They can also add creative blurring effects such as tilt shifts, and they can create mezzotints and halftone effects, and a lot more. Finally, the content creation filters help us to render new items and effects, such as trees and flames and clouds. They even use Adobe Sensei to make changes to portraits and add lighting effects. In the next few videos, we're going to take a look at some techniques that make use of some of the more commonly used filters. We'll learn how to convert layers into smart objects for maximum power and flexibility when applying the filters, and we'll look into detail at the different controls that the filters have. I've also created a document with over 100 examples of filter effects created in Photoshop. You'll find them in your exercise folder.
