Planning the restoration

- This photo has some problems, but with the correct planning, we can find the best way to restore it. When approaching an image such as this, our first goal is to get to see the underlying image. Once we can see the damage, the other problems should be more obvious. I think it's best we tackle the stain first. I don't think it's going to be as complex as you might think. If we were to try diving straight in and attempting to remove the physical damage ahead of ourselves, we would make it harder to restore than it actually is. To remove the staining, we would use the process of converting the image to black and white. That should allow the physical damage to be seen more clearly. This process is helped by having a good sharp scan to start with, and the image should be scanned in high bit color. Images scanned in high bit color or 16-bit color contain more information and withstand this kind of drastic color shifting and without degrading the details. Our image is actually 8-bits, and…
