Refining a layer mask

- [Instructor] Now I'll show you how to automatically refine a layer mask, that is to say, make it much better using one of the best hidden features inside Photoshop. And so the first thing you want to do, assuming that you're working along with me, is click on the thumbnail for the layer mask here inside the layers panel to make it active. That step is very important. Next, you can go to the Select menu and choose Select and Mask. The problem with this approach is that it brings up an entire sub program that can be quite intimidating if you're not well versed in Photoshop. The simpler way to work is to take advantage of a hidden trick. And so what you do is press the Escape key in order to hide that menu, then press and hold the Shift key of all keys, and then return to the Select menu and choose Select and Mask.
