- Now, the whole topic of resolution settings for scans, it can get really wordy and we don't have time for wordy here. So, here is my best effort at boiling down this potentially overwhelming topic into something that's, I don't know, sufficiently complete and also about as streamlined as I can make it. Okay, first thing that you gotta know is that an image's resolution is how many pixels it packs per inch. The more pixels, the greater the detail in the image and the larger it can be displayed, either on screen or in print. Next thing you gotta know is that once you assign a resolution to an image and you make a scan, you can't add more resolution later on. You can only take it away. Okay, you follow me so far? Good. So, what is the right resolution for a good looking image? Well, as some of you know, that number differs depending on whether the destination is for screen or for print.
