Selecting by brightness level

- When we're creating a selection in an image we're generally thinking about a specific area of the photo. And so one of the keys to defining a selection is to figure out exactly how we can think about that area. In other words, what makes the area that we want to select unique? In some cases what makes the area unique might be luminosity values. The area you want to select might be brighter or darker than other areas of the photo and there's a little trick that you can use to create a selection based on luminosity. We're going to use what is essentially an adjustment, a very aggressive adjustment. Almost like a filter effect. And so I want to first make sure that I'm not gonna harm my actual image, and so I'll wanna make a copy of the background image layer. To do that I can simply drag the thumbnail for my background image layer down to the create a new layer button. The blank sheet of paper icon down at the bottom of the layers panel.
