- [Narrator] In this movie I'll show you how to select, modify, and combine independent path outlines inside of a single shape layer using the black and white arrow tools. So, I'll start by zooming in on my star ornament in the lower right corner of the image, and what I want to do is make this gear thinner by bringing the teeth inward, and just to protect the original here I'm going to jump it by pressing Control J or Command J on the Mac, and that'll turn that original gear layer off. All right, now I'll go ahead and switch to the black arrow tool which Photoshop calls the path selection tool. But it has a keyboard shortcut of A for arrow, and notice even if I click off the path outline and then click on it once again, I select both the path that represents the teeth and the inner ring, and that's because these are part of what's known as a compound path, in which one sub path cuts a hole in another.
