- Hi there, and welcome to Design Tools Weekly with me, Tony Harmer. This week, I'd like to share with you one of my favorite 3D modeling tools, which I use, especially, when it's something I need quickly. SketchUp started, primarily, as an architectural modeling product that was connected to Google earth. It was a Google product, of course, but has subsequently been acquired by Trimble. Apart from the obvious uses for modeling buildings, and structures, and products, and all sorts of other things, such as this set of shelves, that I was making for a storage cupboard in my studio, I find it really handy for using in some creative projects, too. SketchUp is a surface-based modeler. And what's meant by that, is it's almost like paper 3D. The objects themselves don't have any depth at all. Just a surface between different vectors.
