Understanding X-sync

- [Deke] In this movie, we're going to introduce you to a fairly technical concept that's primarily applicable to cameras with interchangeable lens. And that's X-Sync, which determines the interaction between your strobe and your shutter speed. So strobes generally fire at 1/2000 of a second or faster which is why they're also known as flashes because they produce flashes of light. Now the camera's mechanical shutter, which exposes the image sensor to the strobe's light is actually two elements or curtains. One that opens and another that closes. - [Hergen] This means that the entire sensor is exposed for no less than 1/200 or 1/320 of a second depending on the camera. And we're going to take a look at what that actually looks like. - [Deke] And so we've gone ahead and created this demonstration right here. - [Hergen] In the case of this sample camera with a mechanical shutter, we're going to see those two curtains at work.
