- [Instructor] In this movie we'll consider some common composition terms and principles in photography that you need to know for the ACA exam. The first one is aspect ratio. This is simply the ratio of the width to the height of an image. Note that the width number comes first. So you know that a 16 by nine image is wider than it is tall. And aspect ratio is also used in the same way to indicate the ratio of the width and height of screens. The rule of thirds is a well known composition technique where the photographer images a three by three grid on top of an image. Dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically so there are nine distinct areas and four precise points where the grid lines intersect. And the idea is to place points of interest where the grid lines intersect to make an effective composition. The rule of thirds is also used by designers when cropping images.
